The first recorded Puja was organised in 1610 by the Sabarna Roy Chowdhury family at their ancestral home at Barisha. They were zamindars during the Mughal period, holding landownership rights over areas that were later acquired by the British East India Company (BEIC) and merged to establish Kolkata.
